This is mainly due to the fact that Australia has one of the highest number of small residential solar systems in the world. The very good solar radiation is an ideal combination to make battery systems a viable option.

BayWa r.e. has been involved in battery system design for several years, mainly in offgrid applications which are more complex in design and setup. This experience allows our team to support our clients with expert advice when it comes to following:

Different Battery Technologies

In the past we have used mainly lead acid technology for our offgrid applications. The new developments in the energy storage world has allowed us to start using lithium based batteries as well. In addition to these technologies we are experienced with saltwater batteries which offer an outstanding environmental advantage. Our technical team evaluates the project requirements differently and decides on the type of technology in conjunction with the client. We treat emerging technologies with some care and ensure that we have confidence in the product before proposing it to our customers.

For our grid battery systems, we use following solutions:

  • LG Chem Lithium batteries
  • Sonnenschein lead acid batteries
  • Energystore lead acid batteries
  • BYD Lithium batteries


Since the explosion of Samsung mobile phones most people are aware of the potential dangers of Lithium based storage systems. They can be very dangerous in domestic applications; hence we are using brands from the most reputable manufacturers in the industry.

Combination with Inverters

We combine our battery systems only with inverters from manufacturers who can prove that they have done extensive testing in relation to compatibility. The charging algorithms for Lithium batteries are quite complex and any mistake in this area can either lead to premature failure, damage and in worst case explosions.
